The effect of a probiotic Enterococcus faecium product in diets of healthy dogs on bacteriological counts of Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp. and Clostridium spp. in faeces

An 18-day experiment evaluating the effects on bacteriological counts of Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp. and Clostridium spp. of a dietary supplementation of probiotic Enterococcus faecium product (E. faecium NCIB 10415 (Enteroferm)) in healthy dogs. The probiotic was proovided to a total of 12 healthy dogs once a day before meals (2g/dog) and the effects were meausred through feces analysis. Data shows that the probiotic provided caused changes on the gastrointestinal microflora, causing an increase of Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. and a decrease of Clostridium spp. 10 dogs. While beneficial effects of probiotics in healthy dogs remain uncertain, this study has shown a positive efficacy effect as per established guidelines.
