Shelter dogs are often diagnosed with acute diarrhea, which can be induced by many causes, including stress, bacteria, parasites, virus, or changes in their diet, and dietary manipulation is the often treatment pathway for these dogs. Through this randomized study, two dry therapeutic diets (PURINA VETERINARY DIETS Canine EN® and Hill’s® Prescription Diet i/d®) were evaluated in young dogs with acute diarrhea but otherwise healthy, that were living in shelters.
A total of 24 dogs were evaluated through at least 11 days, and a total of 14 dogs were fed the PURINA VETERINARY DIETS Canine EN® and 10 dogs were fed the Hill’s® Prescription Diet i/d®. The study found that those fed with the Hill’s® Prescription Diet i/d® were 2.3 times more likely to have diarrheic stools between days 1 though 7 that the dogs fed with PURINA VETERINARY DIETS Canine EN®.
